Scott on the Issues
Health Care:
I oppose mandates under which individuals or employers who do not purchase health insurance would be subject to penalties. I support health insurance reform under which coverage could be obtained regardless of pre-existing condition. I support voluntary pooling arrangements so that small businesses can join together to purchase health insurance. I support ideas like Health Savings Accounts, which empower individuals to make personal health care choices that reduce health care costs. I oppose any government rationing of health care or reduction of benefits for seniors or any Americans. Decisions on health care should be made by patients and doctors, not by bureaucrats in Washington, DC.
Job Creation:
Unemployment remains too high because liberals in Washington, DC believe that catering to special interests, redistributing wealth through increased taxes and imposing mandates on small business are all more important than creating jobs. When jobs are not a priority, unemployment goes up. Increasing taxes on small business impairs private sector job creation. Unreasonable environmental regulations impair private sector job creation. I will support policies that promote the American entrepreneurial spirit and will oppose policies that kill jobs.
Crime:
As a reserve (volunteer) deputy sheriff in Pulaski County, I am committed to protecting law-abiding citizens from criminals. I will support policies that put the rights of victims first, not criminals who victimize the innocent.
Ethics in government:
I seek public office in order to represent Arkansas values in Congress. I will do what I believe is right for the people of Arkansas, regardless of what special interest groups want. I want to represent what you think in Congress.
Education:
It is vital that we prepare our children and young men and women to compete in the global economy. I believe we should not allow federal spending on education to result in a one-size-fits-all education system in which bureaucrats in Washington, DC have more input than parents in Arkansas.
Environment:
I believe that we should protect the environment and promote responsible use of our great land through preservation and conservation. I believe we can protect our environment sensibly in ways that does not impair job growth.
Traditional values:
I believe in the traditional Arkansas values that have always made Arkansas a good place to raise a family. I am pro-life and believe that marriage should be between a man and a woman. My faith is the most important influence in my life and I believe that I am nothing but for Christ.
Taxes:
Taxes on investment impairs private sector investment which is needed for private sector job creation. I will always respect the work done to earn a paycheck and I will work to lower the tax burden on families so that they can keep more of what they earn.
Immigration:
It is essential for national security that we control our borders. I support a real-time system that employers can use to make sure those who seek employment are in this country legally.
Excessive spending and debt:
Washington, DC is spending too much of our money. Excessive spending necessarily results in more debt and higher taxes. I will work to reign in excessive spending, particularly that spending which subsidizes special interests and places even more debt upon the heads of our children.
National Security:
I believe it is critical that our nation possess the strength to deter adversaries and potential adversaries from aggressive conduct. I will work hard to make sure those who put their lives on the line in service of their country will always have what they need to accomplish their mission. I believe that great caution should be exercised before putting our troops in harm’s way.
Cap and Trade/New Energy Taxes:
Cap and Trade is a program under which electricity generators and gasoline refiners will be charged a fee to emit carbon dioxide into the air. This fee is an energy tax that will be passed on to consumers and make your electric bills go up and increase the cost of gasoline. Because China and India do not impose this tax on their industries, it gives China and India a cost advantage over the United States, which will cause more job losses. I am against cap and trade energy taxes.
Card Check:
Card Check is a program which allows unions to be formed by signing a petition rather than having a secret ballot vote. Employees who do not want to unionize can be intimidated into signing the petition, which in effect takes away the right to secret ballot. When union contracts irresponsibly increase the costs of products beyond what consumers are willing to pay or can afford, both workers and consumers lose. Just look what happened to the American automobile industry. I oppose card check legislation.
Bailouts:
A bailout happens when the government uses your tax money to make an investment that private sector investors refuse to make. The AIG bailout, the TARP bailout and the auto-maker’s bailout were all risky investments that private sector investors did not want to make. I oppose bailouts because they reward improper conduct by businesses and unions and force taxpayers to take business risks that private investors refuse to take.
Veteran Issues:
Each person who serves and puts their life on the line for the people of this country deserve the highest attention possible. There is no higher calling than serving your fellow man and I do not support efforts to cut benifits or unfairly tax those benifits to our heros.
Gun rights:
I support the Second Amendment right of law-abiding citizens to own and enjoy the use of firearms.
